Private legacy: Bond University marks 30 years on the Gold Coast
When the late Alan Bond realised his dream of opening a private, not-for-profit university, it was not without controversy. Public debate raged over the very concept of private universities in Australia and whether they would need government subsidies.
At the opening on 15 May 1989, the colourful businessman defended the ambitious venture."We do ourselves a disservice in this country when we don't talk about the positive things that are going on," Bond said.
At the time, Don Watts, the inaugural vice-chancellor, said the university would put Australia's higher education on the world stage.
